Match the chain to what hangs on it

The most common mistake in fine jewelry is a heavy pendant on a delicate chain. Within an hour the clasp has travelled round to the front and the pendant sits crooked. A chain has to carry its pendant without straining, so weight should go up with the piece it holds.

Worn alone, a chain is judged on the opposite quality. A finer chain reads as understated, and a heavier one reads as jewelry in its own right.

Length

Sixteen inches sits at the base of the throat. Eighteen inches, the most common choice, sits just below the collarbone and works over almost any neckline. Twenty inches and above drops onto the chest and layers well with a shorter chain. If you are buying as a gift and cannot check, 18 inches is the safe answer.

Metal and upkeep

Sterling silver chains tarnish, and chains tarnish faster than solid pieces because every link has surface area and the joints trap moisture. A polishing cloth handles it, though a chain takes longer to clean than a ring. Gold and platinum avoid the problem entirely.
