What moissanite actually is

Moissanite is silicon carbide. Henri Moissan identified it in 1893 in an Arizona meteor crater, and natural deposits are effectively nonexistent, so every piece of moissanite jewelry in the world is lab-grown. That makes it conflict-free and mine-free by definition.

It is not a diamond, and it is not a lab-grown diamond either. A lab-grown diamond is pure carbon and is a real diamond in every meaningful sense. Moissanite is a different material with its own optical behavior. We sell moissanite only, and about half the people who land on these pages are not clear on that distinction, so it is worth saying plainly. Our complete guide to moissanite covers the stone properly, and this piece separates it from lab-grown diamond.

Does it tarnish

This is the question we are asked most, so here is the plain answer. Moissanite does not tarnish, cloud, dull, or scratch in normal wear. It sits at 9.25 on the Mohs scale against diamond at 10, which puts it well above anything it will meet day to day.

The metal is a different matter. Sterling silver does tarnish. That is what silver does. It is not a defect, and a polishing cloth takes it off in a minute. If you would rather never think about it, gold and platinum do not tarnish at all, and the difference on a 1ct piece is roughly $150 for silver against $500 and up for gold. We go through the trade-offs in sterling silver versus silver.

Choosing a piece for everyday wear

Setting matters more than stone size for anything worn daily. A bezel wraps metal around the edge of the stone, sits flatter, and catches far less on clothing and hair. Prongs let in more light and show more of the stone, at the cost of catching more. For a piece that goes on every morning and comes off at night, take the bezel.

Frequently asked questions

Does moissanite jewelry tarnish?

The stone never tarnishes, clouds, or dulls. Sterling silver settings do tarnish, which is normal for silver and comes off with a polishing cloth in a minute. Gold and platinum settings do not tarnish at all.

Is moissanite a real gemstone?

Yes. Moissanite is silicon carbide, identified by Henri Moissan in 1893. Natural deposits are effectively nonexistent, so all jewelry moissanite is lab-grown, which makes it conflict-free by definition. It is a different material from diamond and from lab-grown diamond.

Is moissanite good for everyday wear?

Yes. At 9.25 on the Mohs scale it is harder than sapphire and ruby, and resists scratching from anything it meets in daily life. For pieces worn daily, a bezel setting catches less on clothing than prongs.

How long does made-to-order jewelry take?

Two to four weeks door to door from our workshop in Surat. Returns and exchanges run for 30 days from delivery.
