Size without the carat price

A halo earring puts a ring of small stones around each center stone, and the eye reads the whole cluster as one outline. The result is an earring that presents considerably larger than its center weight, for a fraction of what a single stone of that apparent size would cost. Small accent stones are far cheaper per carat than one large one.

On ears specifically this works better than it does on a hand, because earrings are almost always seen from a distance and in motion.

Weight and comfort

Halo earrings are heavier than plain studs of the same center weight, because of the extra metal and stones. On a stud that is rarely a problem. On a larger halo worn all day it can start to pull, particularly on ears that have been pierced a long time. If you have had trouble with heavy earrings before, stay at the smaller end or consider a plain stud instead.
