Length does most of the work
Sixteen inches sits as a collar at the base of the throat. Eighteen inches, the most common length, sits just below the collarbone and clears almost any neckline. Twenty inches and above drops onto the chest and layers well underneath a shorter piece.
If you are buying as a gift and cannot measure, 18 inches is the answer that fits the most people.
Carat weight reads smaller at the neck
A stone at the neck is viewed from further away than a stone on a hand, so it needs more size to register. A 1ct pendant reads as understated where a 1ct ring reads as substantial. If you want the piece noticed rather than merely present, look at 1.5ct and above.
