Earrings are seen from further away

A ring is looked at from arm's length. An earring is seen across a room, in motion, usually against hair. That changes what works. Fine detail disappears at conversational distance, while movement and overall outline carry. It is why a modest drop can read stronger than a larger stud, and why halo settings do more work on ears than they do on hands.

Weight is the thing people forget

Earrings hang from a piercing that has to carry them all day. Large stones in heavy metal pull, and on piercings that have been in place for many years that pull stretches the hole over time. If you have found earrings uncomfortable before, stay at the smaller end or choose a lighter metal. This is the most common complaint in fine jewelry and the easiest to avoid.

Metal and daily wear

Sterling silver is the most affordable option and it tarnishes, which a polishing cloth reverses. Gold and platinum do not tarnish at all. For earrings worn every day and rarely removed, gold is worth the difference, because tarnish builds fastest on jewelry that never gets cleaned.
