Size without the single-stone price
A cluster earring groups several small stones so the eye reads them as one larger shape. Because small stones cost far less per carat than large ones, a cluster gives you presence on the ear for a fraction of what a single stone of that apparent size would cost.
Ears are the best place for this trick. Earrings are almost always viewed from several feet away and in motion, which is exactly when the eye stops resolving individual stones and starts reading the outline.
Cleaning takes more attention
More stones means more settings and more small gaps for skin oil and product residue to collect in. Cluster earrings dull faster than plain studs and need cleaning more often to keep their sparkle. Warm water, a drop of dish soap, and a soft toothbrush handles it.
