Length changes the look completely
A 16 inch tennis necklace sits as a collar at the base of the throat. Eighteen inches, the most common length, sits just below the collarbone. Twenty inches and above drops onto the chest. A tennis necklace shows its entire length rather than one focal point, so this choice changes the piece far more than it would with a pendant.
Necklines matter here too. A collar length competes with a high neckline, while an 18 inch line sits cleanly above most of them.
Matching stones and total weight
The stones in a tennis line have to match each other closely in size, color, and cut, or the line reads uneven under any direct light. Total carat weight is the sum of every stone in the necklace, so a 10ct total is built from many small stones. Comparing that figure against a single-stone piece will mislead you on both size and price.
