Why the round brilliant sparkles most

The modern round brilliant carries 57 or 58 facets arranged to return as much light as possible back up through the top of the stone. No other shape does this as efficiently, which is why every other cut is measured against it.

For moissanite that matters in a specific way. Those many small facets break up moissanite's stronger dispersion, so a round reads closer to a diamond than a step cut of the same weight does. If you want the least conspicuous moissanite available, this is the cut to take.

The size trade-off

A round carries more of its weight in depth than an elongated shape does, so it covers less finger per carat. A 1.5ct round looks smaller on the hand than a 1.5ct oval or marquise of the same weight. You are paying for brilliance rather than for spread, and that is a real choice rather than a flaw.
