Chunky or crushed ice

Cushions are cut two ways and the difference is bigger than the names suggest. A chunky cushion has fewer, larger facets and returns light in broad distinct flashes. A crushed ice cushion has many small facets that scatter light into a granular, glittery look.

For moissanite this choice matters more than it does for diamond. Moissanite disperses light about 2.4 times as strongly, 0.104 against 0.044. A chunky cut shows that as large flashes of color, which some people choose deliberately and others find too obvious. Crushed ice breaks the fire up and reads closer to a diamond.

Proportion and durability

A ratio near 1:1 gives a square cushion. At 1.2:1 and above you get the elongated version, which covers more finger for the same carat weight. The rounded corners also make a cushion more robust than a princess cut, where sharp corners are the first place a stone takes damage.

Every ring is produced after you order, in sterling silver, 10k to 18k gold, or platinum. Allow one to two weeks for production and quality checks, plus one to two weeks in transit to the US. Sizes run 3 to 10 in quarter steps, with 30 days to return or exchange.
