Asscher Cut Moissanite Engagement Rings

Asscher cut moissanite engagement rings, made to order in sterling silver, gold, or platinum. A square step cut with cropped corners, developed in 1902 and closely tied to Art Deco design.

A square step cut

An asscher is essentially a square emerald cut. Long parallel facets run in steps down from a large open table, and cropped corners give the stone an octagonal outline. Looking into one produces the layered reflections people describe as a hall of mirrors.

The Asscher brothers developed the cut in 1902 and it became a signature of Art Deco jewelry through the 1920s and 1930s. It reads as period in a way few other shapes manage.

Fire, and how obvious it gets

Step cuts have broad facets, and broad facets show moissanite's dispersion as large distinct flashes of color rather than fine sparkle. Moissanite disperses light about 2.4 times as strongly as diamond, 0.104 against 0.044. Above roughly 1.5 to 2ct in bright daylight that becomes noticeable to anyone paying attention.

Some buyers choose an asscher for exactly that effect. If you want the same architectural outline without the color flashes, a radiant cut gives you cropped corners with brilliant faceting inside.
